Concerto for Horn by Simon Proctor
This was written for John Thurgood, principal horn of the English Chamber Orchestra and of English National Opera, and was sponsored by the Britten-Piers Trust with support from the British Horn Society.
It is 25 minutes of continuous music but, according to the composer, 'clearly divided into 4 1/2 movements'. The first is fast and lively, the second slower and calmer, the third 'unadulterated swing jazz with a hint of calypso', then a short interlude (the half-movement) ending with a fast and light finale. It is fun and rewarding to play, and is unequivocally audience friendly.
Originally scored for horn and string orchestra, it is available to buy as a piano reduction, whilst orchestra parts will be available for hire from Paxman Ltd.
